ANYTHING CAN GLOW
Previous Artzept competitions were thematically defined and contestants were free to choose the materials and methods. This year, however, it is the other way around – the theme ANYTHING CAN GLOW is open, unstructured and the designers themselves are to decide about its content, while the material – LED (Light Emitting Diodes), which can be fitted into various artistic contexts, household objects and materials (wood, glass, rubber, polyester and various composite materials) – is a set requirement.
LED have been chosen as the focal point of the artistic expression as they represent the contemporary hi-tech sensibility incorporated in both the present and the future but also because radiance and glow effect permeates the modern world, while the significance of its role in arts as well as in contemporary multi-media techniques is indisputable. The choice of LED does not necessarily imply designing a lighting object, but rather its incorporation into various useful household items where they would not be normally found.

The glowing knife block

•The main goal of this knife block is to give you a high quality knives set and a very attractive space to store them in. The light has been designed to have many functions. One is just simply to give your knife block a very simplistic but unique look. It will also highlight where you need to slide the knife in when you are done using and cleaning it. This will be done by the pieces of Acrylic in between the pieces of defused materials.
•This is a really simple but elegant design where I tried to combine the natural beauty of the Wall nut and by using the characteristics of the defusing material to defuse the light (LED’s) coming from a cavity at the bottom of the knife block. In this cavity there are LED strips that are stuck on to a piece of acrylic that will act as a lid to keep the cavity closed. The LED light will travel through the defusing material which will give this knife block its unique but still simplistic look. There aren’t really a lot of other knife blocks that look anything like this design.
•The wood and defusing material piece used in this product will have to be CNC cut. The acrylic pieces can be laser cut or this can also be done by cutting it out with a CNC. The part will need to be glued up very carefully and accurately so that all of the pieces are lined up with one another’s edges. This product will have a really high quality finish so that it will look fantastic and appealing to the eyes.
